Multiple sources: Using windows for rim lighting

Create a rim light indoors with window light. Take several test shots while the model slowly turns away from the window. Keep the model in a position where the light brightens the side of their head and shoulders without spilling over in to their face. Use a key flash with a window rim light will help create proper lighting for the face.

  • In this setup we use the window light just as a fill in.
  • The main light (key light) comes from a flash with a standard reflector; no difussor.
  • Barndoors are used to control the key light direction more specific.
  • You can use any mobile flash head (monobloc) or your speedlight for recreating this situation.
  • Important is to set a low shutter speed so the ambient light (sun/window) can greatly impose the atmosphere.
  • Due to use of flash as your key light the image will not be shaky as the flash itself lit with more than 1/1000 sec. So no worries. But always double check on your display (zoom in).
  • Also set the ISO a bit higher, this influences the overall ambient light characteristic too.
  • Photoshop: Model skin & make-up retouched, general brightness/contrast & color adjustments
